Teen Sports: The Therapy We Never Talk About,
I had the incredible opportunity to speak at TEDx Montgomery College, and I couldn’t have been more excited.
My talk, “Teen Sports: The Therapy We Never Talk About,” explored how sports can be more than competition — they can be a form of therapy, connection, and emotional growth for today’s teens.
Sports Build Emotional Strength: Team environments teach perseverance, accountability, and how to recover from setbacks — lessons that last far beyond the scoreboard.
Movement Regulates the Mind: Physical activity improves focus, reduces anxiety, and balances the nervous system — something I’ve studied firsthand through my StressSense and BrainBoost projects.
Belonging Matters More Than Winning: When teens feel supported — not judged — in sports, they gain confidence and a sense of identity that supports their mental health.
Coaches as Mentors: A compassionate coach can be as impactful as a therapist. The way we talk to young athletes shapes how they see themselves.
Why This Message Matters
Today’s teens face constant pressure — grades, expectations, and digital overload. But on the field, court, or track, something shifts:
they connect, breathe, and belong.
I believe sports can be one of the most accessible and powerful tools for mental health and emotional resilience, and my goal was to start that conversation — not just for athletes, but for parents, educators, and anyone guiding young people through these critical years.
